Data Recovery Tips

 Tip of the Month

The very first steps taken after a disk, tape, or RAID failure often directly influence cost and recoverability. When access to needed data has been lost, follow these simple rules to avoid making the problem worse or irreversible:

  • Do NOT power a drive that is making unusual noises.
  • Do NOT run a utility that can write to the disk (such as chkdsk or fschk).
  • NEVER rebuild or recreate a RAID, and never force a failed drive back online.
  • Do NOT open the hard drive.
